The main causes are:
- diabetes
- hypertension
- chronic glomerulonephritis
- chronic pyelonephritis
- congenital and hereditary nephropathy.
Other risk factors include:
- Chronic administration of nephrotoxic drugs
- age, especially over 60-70 years
