World Kidney Day Celebrated at the Centre of Excellence in Dialysis Services in Chisinau

On  March10, the Dialysis Centre in Chisinau hosted the press conference dedicated to World Kidney Day.

Celebrated annually, on the 2nd Thursday of March, the World Kidney Day has the purpose to raise the awareness with respect to the importance of renal health and reducing the frequency and impact of renal diseases.

The figures are frightening.  The worldwide statistics, valid for Moldova, shows that one adult of ten persons suffers from chronic kidney disease, which means that in our country the number of persons affected by this disease reaches around 350 thousand. Although frequent and dangerous, these diseases can be effectively treated if discovered prematurely.

“Chronic renal insufficiency is the most difficult and dangerous consequence of kidney diseases, affecting also children.  The treatment in these cases is usually dialysis or kidney transplantation.  According to the statistics, over 490 patients were included in dialysis treatment by the end of 2015, in Moldova.  On March 1, 2016, there were 61 renal patients registered for transplantation.  We hope that  towards the end of the year the average number of patients treated by dialysis will increase by 100-130, due to BB-Dialysis private Centre”,  mentioned Mr. Adrian Tanase, chief of Urology and Nephrology Surgery Department of the Medical University” N. 2016 is the 10-th anniversary since the history of World Kidney Day began, which  always focuses on a specific subject. This year the children kidney diseases and their prevention are brought to the attention of the public.

“Kidney diseases affect children due to incorrect development of this organ (malformations), genetic inheritance (hereditary) or infections and pathologies that affect these organs proper functioning.  The clinical manifestations are nonspecific at newly born babies and during their first year of  life but their early diagnosis is critical to prevent their degradation with an evolution towards renal chronic terminal, “said Mrs. Valentina Rotaru, Deputy Minister of Health of the RM, member of the Moldovan Association of Paediatricians, Urologists and Nephrologists.

Terminal stage chronic renal insufficiency is a tough diagnosis, which presumes including of person in dialysis, medical procedure of renal function substitution. There are about 500 dialysis dependent patients in Moldova, 200 of whom being  patients of the Dialysis Centre in Chisinau, opened within public private partnership project for dialysis services.

“The process of rapid transformation of this service into a modern branch of the national health system, more friendly to patients subject to dialysis, began immediately after the inauguration of the first Dialysis Centre within public private partnership in dialysis.  The operation of the Dialysis Centre of Excellence, from the first day of activity, is based on the principle “We care – We participate”, which is a genuine manifestation of practical implementation of the “BB-Dialysis” slogan: “Partnership for Life”.   The amelioration of health was attained for 5 of 6 patients, involved in dialysis at the Centre of Excellence, only during two months.  This fact is due to the high quality of materials and the latest generation of equipment, as well as to a complex treatment of acute and chronic complications of renal insufficiency, which became possible after in-depth diagnostic evaluation of dialysis patients”, emphasized Mr. Petru Cepoida, medical director of Chisinau Dialysis Centre.

Specialists involved in public health draw the attention by saying that most kidney diseases can be prevented if the person adopts a healthy lifestyle and follow a few golden rules.

“The golden rules for chronic kidney disease prevention are: avoiding the excess of meat and salt, limiting to the maximum the processed products and preservatives. Monitoring body weight, daily consumption of fruits and vegetables.  Reducing smoking and alcohol consumption, switching to a healthy lifestyle, respecting the principles of healthy food, avoiding self-treatment and prophylactic examination by physicians”, stated Luminita Suveica, head of Chisinau municipality Public Health Centre.

 

The Dialysis Centre is hosting the first event of public information of citizens about kidney diseases and their prevention, but the management of the institution hopes that organizing of such events will become a tradition.

“We want this conference to be a beginning of a tradition. We expect to increase the number of events informing the public about kidney diseases every year.   It is unavoidable that a part of kidney patients will continue with dialysis, this is happening worldwide, but our mission is to implement the most demanding standards of treatment and to improve the quality of life of people subject to dialysis”, mentioned Mr. Dmitri Onufreiciudc, administrator of BB-Dialysis.

The press conference was held in Dialysis Centre in Chisinau, launched on January 4, 2016, within public private partnership project for dialysis services in Moldova.  To implement the project in the country and to provide high-quality dialysis services for all patients with terminal renal insufficiency, the German consortium, represented in Moldova by BB-dialysis company, will invest 15 ml Euro.
